Petrol Tanks
Petrol is handled differently from diesel. It gives off vapour at normal temperatures, so the fittings and the way the tank is set up matter more.
What we do with petrol tanks
- New tank fabrication, delivery and installation
- Bunded and double wall tanks
- Underground tanks
- Skid mounted tanks, built on their own frame
- Removal and replacement of an existing tank
- Flame arrestors fitted
- Vents fitted and positioned
- Earthing and bonding
- Blast cleaning to Sa 2½ and protective coating
- Hydrostatic and pressure testing
- Calibration and calibration charts
- Level monitoring and fuel distribution systems
Why the fittings matter
A petrol tank needs to breathe as fuel goes in and out, and the vapour it releases must be kept away from any source of ignition. A flame arrestor stops a flame travelling back into the tank through the vent. Earthing and bonding carry away the static that builds up while fuel is moving. These are not extras. They are part of how a petrol tank should be built.
Containment
Petrol spreads further and evaporates faster than diesel, and the vapour travels. Containing a leak before it reaches the floor matters more here than on any other tank we build. A bunded tank does that with a second outer shell; a concrete bund around a single skin tank does the same job as long as it holds the full contents, and we build those too. We would want one or the other on any petrol tank and we will say so in the quotation.
Work we have completed
We removed an existing petrol tank at a resort in South Malé Atoll, reinforced the boundary, and fabricated and installed a new 15,000 litre petrol tank in its place.
Work out a capacity
Tank capacity calculator
Enter the inside dimensions and the drawing redraws to scale as you type. Works in metric or imperial, and will tell you the volume at any dip depth as well as the full capacity.
Converting a dip reading into litres is exactly what a calibration chart does. We prepare them from the tank's own measured dimensions.
- — cubic metres
- — imperial gallons
- — US gallons
- — cubic feet
These are gross internal figures worked out from the dimensions you entered, with no allowance for internal fittings. A real tank holds a little less, and is never filled to the very top. Surface area is the shell and the ends, which is what coating is applied to. Final capacity, plate thickness and coating quantity are confirmed on the drawings.

Common questions
Can you replace a tank that is still in the ground or still connected?
Yes. Removing the old tank safely is part of the job. We agree the sequence and the isolation with your engineer first.
Do you build bunded petrol tanks?
Yes, and we recommend containment on every petrol tank, either as a bunded tank or as a concrete bund. We build both, including the concrete work.
Do you supply the fittings or do we?
We supply and fit them. Tell us what is already there and we will work with it where it is sound.
Is a site visit needed before quoting?
For petrol work, almost always. Access, vapour, ignition sources and how the tank is connected all affect the method and the price.
