Water Tanks

Water tanks fall into two groups, and they are not built the same way. Tell us which you need and we will quote the right specification rather than the cheapest one.

Drinking water

A tank holding water people will drink needs an internal coating suitable for potable water, and it needs cleaning and disinfecting after any work inside it. We do both.

  • New tank fabrication and installation
  • Internal coating suitable for drinking water
  • Stainless steel tanks, where you would rather not depend on a coating
  • Cleaning and disinfection
  • Rust removal and recoating of existing tanks
  • Leak repair

There are two ways to build a drinking water tank. Mild steel with a potable grade internal coating is the normal choice and it works well, as long as the coating is maintained and recoated when it reaches the end of its life. Stainless steel costs considerably more at the outset and then needs no internal coating at all. For a tank that is hard to reach, or one you would rather not take out of service every several years, stainless is often the better value over the life of the tank. We will price both.

Irrigation and general water

Irrigation, landscaping, firefighting and general service water do not need a potable specification, so the tank costs less. We will tell you plainly which specification your use needs.

  • Mild steel tanks fabricated to suit the site
  • Tanks built to fit water tanker trucks
  • Horizontal, vertical or rectangular to suit the space
  • Protective coating inside and out
  • Maintenance and recoating

Work we have completed

We carried out maintenance on three 170,000 litre water storage tanks at a resort in Haa Alifu Atoll, removing rust and corrosion and applying three protective paint coats. We have also quoted mild steel water tanks built to fit the truck models commonly used in the Maldives.

Work out a capacity

Tank capacity calculator

Enter the inside dimensions and the drawing redraws to scale as you type. Works in metric or imperial, and will tell you the volume at any dip depth as well as the full capacity.

100%

Converting a dip reading into litres is exactly what a calibration chart does. We prepare them from the tank's own measured dimensions.

Total capacity — litres
Volume at that depth — litres
Surface area — square metres
  • — cubic metres
  • — imperial gallons
  • — US gallons
  • — cubic feet

These are gross internal figures worked out from the dimensions you entered, with no allowance for internal fittings. A real tank holds a little less, and is never filled to the very top. Surface area is the shell and the ends, which is what coating is applied to. Final capacity, plate thickness and coating quantity are confirmed on the drawings.

Common questions

Is the coating safe for drinking water?

For drinking water tanks we use a coating suitable for potable water. Ask us and we will confirm the system on your quotation.

Should we use stainless steel for drinking water?

It costs more but needs no internal coating. For a tank that is hard to reach or hard to take out of service, it often works out better over the life of the tank. We will price both.

How long does the tank need to be out of service?

Long enough to empty, prepare, coat and allow the coating to cure. We give you the number of days in the quotation so you can plan your supply.

Do you clean tanks without recoating them?

Yes. Cleaning and disinfection can be done on its own as a regular service.
